HAPA-NA cosign the letter addressed to president Obama

January 12, 2011

President Barack H. Obama
The White House
1600 Pennsylvania Avenue NW
Washington, DC 20500

Dear President Obama:

As you prepare to welcome China's President Hu Jintao to Washington, we, the undersigned representatives of Taiwanese-American organizations, appeal to you to reaffirm America's support for freedom, democracy and human rights in Taiwan.

We understand that in order to solve many of the world's major problems, the United States needs to engage China. However, such engagement should not be done at the expense of America's core values-freedom, democracy and human rights, as embodied in the nation of Taiwan.

In November 2009, during your visit to Beijing, Chinese leaders asserted that Taiwan was one of China's so-called "core interests." We ask you to remind Mr. Hu that it is a national interest of the United States that the future of Taiwan be resolved peacefully and with the express consent of the people of Taiwan. We also request that you refrain from proffering U.S. respect for China’s "sovereignty and territorial integrity" as China lays specious claim over Taiwan.

We believe that it is in the best interest of the United States to take a clear position on the following issues as well.

We ask you to prod China to dismantle its 1,600 missiles targeted at Taiwan and renounce the threat or use of force against Taiwan. To safeguard Taiwan is to embrace freedom, democracy and human rights. This is the best way to maintain peace and stability in Asia and consistent with the 1979 Taiwan Relations Act. In so doing, America will be looked upon with respect and trust by the multitude of nations in that part of the world.

We also implore you to impress upon the Chinese delegation that it is essential to end Taiwan's international political isolation. Taiwan is a peace-loving country. It is able and willing to carry out United Nations Charter obligations. Taiwan deserves an equal place in the international family of nations, and its people should be fully represented in international organizations such as the U.N. and the World Health Organization.

Thank you for your attention.

Sincerely yours,

HAPA-NA Hawaii Cruise Hakka Forum

Dear Members and Hakka friends,

HAPA-NA is honor to sponsor the Hawaii Cruise Hakka Forum. Many thanks to David Lai's effort to organize this event. I think it will be a great addition to the happy Hawaii cruising, I would like to encourage both the HAPA-NA members and Hakka friends, as well as some Taiwanese American from Northern California to participate the meeting and discussion.

The topics are attractive, and the #4. question of how Taiwanese American can contribute to Taiwan is particular brain storming, I think David can lead to discuss this issue well.

Besides, we were also able to have Hakka friends from Taiwan, Mr. Lo and Prof. Vang
to give their speeches, to bring us the first hand political information in Taiwan. Enjoy the conference.

In the past, HAPA-NA also held a general meeting in this kind of summer gathering if we had enough members participated. I had asked David Lai and Ed Lin to help me to hold the meeting in my absence.

I hope every one will have a good time. Under link please see the topics outlined by David to be discussed in forum.

Thank you all.

Chanchi Lee, President 9/25/2010

1014 Hakka Gathering

Dear All,

One of the Hapa-na's mission according to by-law is to care about Taiwan's future and help out. So, in Toronto's meeting, summer Last year, we did discuss about how to reach out to our Hakka brethren in Taiwan to communicate and exchange the thought of current situation in Taiwan, and better yet, to arouse their sense and consciousness of democracy, freedom of speech, human right and Taiwan identity.

So, we did it once, 323 Hakka Gathering, 6 months ago with great success and good response.

Now we can do it again on this 10/14, taking the advantage of having 3 Hapa-Na officials in Taiwan at the same time to hold a Hapa-na sponsoring HAKKA gathering/ meeting at Gwansi Hsinchu. We were very happy to invite Prof. Aquia Tsay to be the keynote speaker to talk about Self Liberation, this will be a good subject for Hakka to think about, because our long struggle history. The meeting will be in Hakka Toastmasters format and all attendees will be involved and get chance to speak up. Please check the Agenda of 1014 Hakka Gathering.

If you happen in Taiwan at that time, you are welcome to join the meeting. And please
also encourage your friend or relatives in Taiwan to join. ( Need RSVP to abctea@gmail.com or 626.926-0258 for lunch count ).

Thank you,

Chanchi Lee, Presient 9/19/2010
