Dear All,
Many Taiwanese and Taiwanese Americans do not know what is TRA, or did not pay attention to it.
TRA is abbreviation for Taiwan Relation Act, which was created in Jan. 1979 when Carter recognized China (PRC) as solely China and broke the diplomatic relation with ROC. The US congress was doing this to counter balance Carter's act and try to help for Taiwan's survival. Under this "strange" domestic act or law Taiwan has been prosperous for past 30 years without worry about China's invasion and this TRA will continue to play a vital role of Taiwan's survival, just like a kidney machine to maintain the life for an ailing kidney patient. Many people believed this is what Taiwan still surviving!
For this reason, it is important to commemorate it 30th anniversary to appreciate what US did for Taiwan,that is why the March for Taiwan and DC press conference were held. Recently, there was a American Samoa ( like Guam, small island ) representative was coerced by China submitted a request to change the clause of TRA. It was fortunately discovered by FAPA and helped by majority of congressmen defeated the change.
Yesterday we, Taiwanese 11 organizations, held a press conference in DC National Press Conference Center toappreciate the US help, discuss about human right issue in Taiwan, Defense military issue, also touch the issue ofReferendum for Taiwan,urge the US government to continue to support Taiwan and signed a joined statement to send to president Obama. So it was a very meaningful event . March for Taiwan was also to have different ceremony to conclude the march to thank to US TRA help.
I did represent HAKKA community to join the Taiwan organizations,Taiwanese American know we HAPA-NA is theirreliable partner to help out Taiwan's cause.
